Hoyer Statement on October Jobs Report

WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Department of Labor announced unemployment numbers for the month of October:

“Today’s news that the unemployment rate has surpassed 10% is unacceptable.  While we are losing significantly fewer jobs now than one year ago, too many people remain out of work.  Democrats have taken action to help middle-class Americans who have been hardest hit by this recession.  Yesterday, the House passed an extension of unemployment insurance benefits, which the President signed into law today.  This will give direct assistance so that Americans can keep providing for their families, and it will also keep generating demand which is critical to our economic recovery.

“Even as we are encouraged by news that the economy grew in the last quarter, we know that a recession of this magnitude does not end overnight, and we expect more tough times ahead.  Democrats remain focused on doing everything we can to keep creating jobs so that Americans get back to work and we rebuild a strong and stable economy.”
